Disclosure: We received ETY Kids 5 earphones for review purposes. This post represents my unbiased opinion.
Technology saturation for children is at an all time high. While most parents worry (deservedly so) about the amount of time young eyes spend in front of a screen, there is a tendency to forget the child’s ears too. It seems like everyone has their electronics turned up to 11, which can be possibly be damaging to young ear drums.
Most headphone and earphone manufacturer tout how loud and clear the sounds are in their devices, which is great for adults, but since the majority of children are also using these sets as well, parents have to be especially mindful on how loud their children are listening to music or playing games. This is certainly not easy as volume controls are practically the first thing a child learns to use when playing any device.
Thankfully, Etymotic Research has developed a way to ensure that your child’s ears remain protected even when you are not around with the ETY Kids 5 earphones. The ETY Kids 5 was specifically created to control the sound output coming from a device so that it does not exceed a certain range. That means the volume can only go so high ensuring that volume levels are safe. Even at its highest output the earphones are safe for listening to music up to 4 hours.
In addition, the earphones were designed for children ages 4 and up with specially molded ACCU fit ear-tips which do not fall out as easily as other earphones. The ear-tips also serve as noise isolation, so the fact that the ETY Kids 5 do not go up as high as other earphones does not even come into the equation.
ETY Kids 5 hits all the points that I was looking for in a earphone for Rock. Since he has started to play and learn on our iPad, it has been a bit of a struggle to control the sound so that it would be loud enough for him to hear but also not bother the rest of us. We had tried various headphones and earphones but they were obviously not designed with 5 year-olds in mind, as they were too big or just uncomfortable.
With the ETY Kids 5 the first thing that I did was ensure that the ACCU Fit ear-tips fit his ears and didn’t fall out. After going trying each one of the assortment of tips provided we found one that was comfortable and secure. Afterward I tried them myself with my iPod at it highest volume and was quite pleased with what I heard. While the sound was noticeably lower that I had been expecting it came through the headphones quite clearly to the point that even in a noisy environment I was able to hear every note without a problem.
I then decided to give it the true test and let Rock play with them on and see the results. Thankfully, I received no complaints. The earphone fit snugly in his ear and actually did not fall out when he would move. Rock also did not have any problems with the the sound or volume.
The ETY Kids 5 is compatible with any portable device with an audio port including Apple products and retails for around $39.99. For more information please go to http://www.etymotic.com.
