Disclosure: We recieved a Lifeproof Nuud for the iPad Air for review purposes. This post represents my unbiased opinion.
UPDATE (7/21/14)-We recieved the Cover + Stand and Hand Strap + Sholder Strap after our intial review. Each one is sold seperately and retail for $40. See below for more of our thoughts on these accessories.
Life is too short to worry about breaking your iPad or tablet, but that is what I find myself thinking about as I purchased the latest iPad Air. When you drop nearly $1000 on a single “toy” you want to make sure that you don’t break it in the first month.
All the insurance policies in the world won’t stop you from that unlucky drop on the floor which shatters the screen. I am sure that many of you iPhone owners know the feeling. In the case of an iPhone even if the screen is broken, you can still make phone calls (though who uses an i “phone” to make call anyways) but do that to a tablet or iPad and you basically lose the exact reason why you bought it in the first place.
Which brings me back to my question, how do you protect it? Over the past couple of years the one name that I keep on coming back to in terms of protecting my iProducts is Lifeproof (now recently bought by Otterbox). I have had a love affair with Lifeproof ever since I saw one of their product demos in CE Week a couple years ago. There were the first (and still only) case that fully protected the tablet and phone while providing you with a sleek and functional exterior.
The Nuud for the iPad Air is no exception. Taking a similar design approach from the iPhone 5 case that we reviewed here, the Nuud has no front screen protection meaning you have full access to the screen without the usual deadspots and airbubbles that using a screan protector usually has all while still giving you the protection you need:
• Shock proof
• Dirt proof
• Water proof
• Snow proof
With a Lifeproof case you can take your tablet anywhere, so that is what I did. It just so happens that I had a trip to India coming up for work and I decided to bring the case along to really give it a try. Here is a video of my impression prior to leaving for the trip:
Now that I have gotten back, I can really attest to the Nuud’s dependability and durability. I took it everywhere with me, from the air plane to the city and rural areas of India without experience a problem. It got wet and it got hit, and it kept on going, without a scratch or dent. My only complaint is that there isn’t a cover for the front screen, which leaves you with a risk that the screen might get scratched. With that said, I am sure that I would not have been able to survive in India without my iPad and my iPad would not have survived the trip without the Lifeproof Nuud.
UPDATE- Just finished trying out the new cover and straps, each of which are sold seperately. I have to say with the new cover, the Lifeproof Nuud seems complete. Based on the simple Apple covers that you see everywhere, you are fully able to configure the cover to stand the iPad in either standing up for viewing movies or lying down wich makes it easier for typing. Right out of the box, the cover was extremely easy to install. Using a slim slot in the back of the Lifeproof case, all you need to do is snap the cover in place which keeps the cover in place and secure. The cover does not magnetically wake the iPad up like the Apple covers do, nor does it stay closed on its own either through a magnet or a latch. With that said, the cover protects the one vunerable spot in the Lifeproof case without comprimising the wonderful performance of the screen.
The Lifeproof hand and sholder straps attach easily to the Lifeproof case and provide a safe and secure way to carry the iPad without having to use a backpack or a bag. Actually, I have used the hand strap as an easy way to hold the iPad while I read. The handstrap is made of some sort of spandex web netting that is waterproof and makes the grip slip proof when the iPad is wet and slippery. Both the sholder straps and the hand strap are completely adjustable and will adjust to any size hand or body type.
