If you are a good parent you want to raise a smart kid. Since that baby is born you dream that they will be safe, fulfilled and reach for the stars…….hopefully Ivy League stars.
Yes I want all of that for my sons but being born outside of the United States I have been given an international perspective. I LOVE the United States from sea to shining sea. However I want my boys to be world citizens and we all know the benefits of reading with our children. So why not use the power of reading to travel to faraway lands and teach them about new cultures and exotic destinations.
Some of our current favorite reads:
Arco Iris de Poesía Poemas de Las Americas y Espana selected by Sergio Andricain
The collection of illustrated poems is completely in Spanish and celebrates poems from Spain and North and South America. Shel Silverstein even makes an appearance!
Lailah’s Lunchbox by Reem Raruqi
A simple story that introduces Ramadan and Muslim customs to your little one in a delightful story of being different and realizing different also means special.
The Odyssey a Graphic Novel by Gaeth Hinds
Based on Homer’s epic poem with gorgeous illustrations that brings the epic journey to life. If you are familiar with the classic poem you know there is a lot of violence. The graphic novel stays true to the tale without being gory. Fantastic introduction to Greek mythology.
The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi
The tale of Unhei reminds me of 5-year-old me and my new American life. And just like little Divina, little Unhei finds friends and a new life with lots of possibility.
I Pledge Allegiance by Bill Martin Jr and Michael Sampson
From the author of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See, Bill Martin and Michael Sampson put to illustrations what the pledge of allegiance really means. Lots of pictures, explanations and American trivia that is the perfect read for this Election Day.
