Disclosure: We received a copy of the Blu-Ray/Digital for review purposes.
Imagine a world without the Beatles! I know it is hard to think about considering the huge cultural impact that they have had on the world, but that this the premise that the movie Yesterday (now out on Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital) was built on. From the moment the trailer came out, we were super excited to watch the film. Especially on heels of this new wave of music based movies that has happened recently featuring music that is played regularly in the Dancing Hotdogs household (Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) and Rocketman (Elton John)), Even if you are not big fans of the Fab Four you can still appreciate the idea of what would happen to the world if their music wasn’t present. As far as the Dancing Hotdogs family is concerned it would be a much sadder world for it.
Trailer and Official Synopsis
Here is the official synopsis of the movie:
Jack Malik was just another struggling songwriter…but that was yesterday. After a mysterious blackout, Jack (Himesh Patel; BBC’s “EastEnders”) discovers he is the only person on earth who remembers The Beatles! As he rockets to fame by passing off the Fab Four’s songs as his own, Jack risks losing Ellie (Lily James; Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Cinderella) – the one person who has loved him and believed in him from the start. Kate McKinnon and Ed Sheeran also star in this romantic rock ‘n’ roll comedy from Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually).
The thing that I really enjoyed about the movie was just the reactions of people hearing some of these great songs for the first time. It really had me appreciating the genius of the lyrics of Lennon and McCartney as well as the amazing song writing skill of the entire foursome. Though I am a bit dubious that their songs would be as big hits now as they were back then, It would be difficult for anyone to say that they wouldn’t at least find a large audience.
Special props has to be given to Himesh Patel, the lead in the movie, for having the difficult task of both acting as well as singing all of these amazing songs and doing them justice. Overall, everyone really enjoyed watching the movie, though the ending wasn’t as strong as the rest of the film.
If you were as big as fans as we are of the film then picking up the Blu-Ray is a must as it contains a multitude of extras including gag reels, music videos and the below:
