Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Movie Review
By Rosa
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the 6th out of the 7 book series to make it to the big screen. By now everyone has at least seen one of the movies or read the books. For me, when I started reading the books I couldn’t put them down. I quickly became a huge fan of Harry Potter . Personally I prefer the books over the movies. For this particular movie, I thought it wasn’t as dark as it should have been. The book was very dark and sad which is why it wasn’t one of my favorites.
From the very beginning, Death Eaters show their power to the muggles (humans) and wizards of the world. Harry, Ron, and Hermione (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) are starting their 6th year at Hogwarts (the wizard school). Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) shows his true colors and you hate him even more for what he does. Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) must complete Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) wish or else he will die. Usually the students of Hogwarts are fighting against unwanted spells and enchantments but this year they are also fighting their teenage hormones. The dark scenes where pushed aside to make room for the lovey dovey scenes. Ron has a girlfriend and realizes that kissing his obsessed girlfriend gives him chapped lips. Harry and Ginny’s romance grow while Hermoine tries to runaway from an unwanted admirer since she secretly loves Ron who doesn’t realize it. With all the puppy love surrounding the school, a great tragedy will occur right under their noses.
For those who have been following the movie series, you can definitely tell Harry, Ron and Hermione are getting older. Not only do they look older but they act more adult. Ron now has muscles and Hermione brushes her hair unlike the first couple of movies. If the production of the next movie doesn’t move quickly then the actors may look too old for their part.
Draco has grown up as well. Following in his father’s footsteps he went into the dark side and he does not joke around with his friends anymore. With this new evil maturity, he decides that Hogwarts is a joke and the only reason he is there is to help the Deathly Hollows enter the school property.
I was content with the way that the 6th book was interpreted but I still prefer the books. The constant battle Harry and his friends have to endure gets tiring. These kids just have the worst luck ever.
I can see why many die hard fans would have not liked the movie. There wasn’t as much attention to important details from the book like the relationship between Draco and Snape and the unbreakable vow. Draco was more a main character in this book and in the movie he was kept to the side.
As I said before, this was not one of my favorite books of the series but as the movie, I enjoyed it. The puppy love scenes were definitely comic relief. Any Harry Potter fan who enjoyed this book would not like the movie so go see a matinee or stay home and reread the books so you won’t be disappointed. If you are just a DancingHotdogs fan who wants to be entertained go see a matinee.
