Megamind Movie Review

megamind-movie-poster

By Divina Phew, October is over and now Babyboy and I can finally go to the movies again.  Unfortunately, there haven't been many that we wanted to see or that were kid friendly other than that Owl movie.  We do not do scary movies; we have horrible nightmares about monsters. So we were very happy when on November 5, DreamWork Animation came out with their latest release Megamind which was a super fun family film that has everyone cheering for the villain instead of the hero. Villian Megamind voiced by Will Ferrell and Hero Metro Man voiced by Brad Pitt have been rivals since they were babies flying through space as they escaped their destroyed home planets.  Metro Man got all the luck by being fair skinned and raised by super wealthy parents.  Megamind is blue, crash lands in a prison yard and is raised by criminals who teach him the wrong kind of morals. Fast forward to grown up Metro Man and Megamind battling for control over Metro City and the heart of Roxanne … [Read more...]

Blockbuster Express Weekend Movie Marathon (pt.1)

four-christmases-posterfinal-full

After posting on BlockBuster triple play deal, D and I felt that we would be crazy not to also take advantage of the deal too.  So last weekend we decided to head to the Big Y Grocery Store and pick out three movies to watch. Little did we know that illness and cold rainy weather would allow us to watch all three movies on Saturday and then return to pick out another three before the end of the weekend.  So without further adieu here are the results from that Dancinghotdogs Blockbuster Express Weekend Movie Marathon (I am considering shortening the title a bit).  The first three we saw that weekend (part 1) will be posted today, and the following day's movies will be posted tomorrow (part 2). Four Christmases By Divina Rosa had posted a review on this before but this is my spin. Movie about unmarried couple who must spend Christmas with their dysfunctional families because the forces of nature have canceled their vacation plans. This movie was trying too hard to … [Read more...]

Sherlock Holmes Movie Review

sherlock-holmes-movie-poster-02

By Eddy Let you and I speak plainly, dear reader.  We follow certain directors because we enjoy their style. While am I not saying directors should not break out and do something different, I also feel that if it isn't broke don't fix it.  Unfortunately, whether be it the pressures of having a high profile film with A list actors or having to deal with a period piece rather being in a more contemporary setting, Sherlock Holmes comes out as a generic blockbuster action film.  Not to say that this is a bad thing, but with such sharp films that Guy Ritchie has done and with the witty multi story style that he has exhibited in the past, the film feels like Guy used the Micheal Bay book of directing films and failed to insert his own flair. Its understandable that this film would place an inordinate amount of pressure on Guy, with a winter tentpole date and reigning actor of the year Robert Downey Jr.  The heat was on to put out a product not necessarily that would be great but … [Read more...]

Inglourious Basterds Movie Review

1224252968211_1

Another grand, operatic Tarantino mash-up of movie genres By Jeff Inglourious Basterds is broken into titled chapters (first is ‘Once upon a time in Nazi-occupied France...' ), very similar to other Quentin Tarantino movies. The style, tone, humor, characters, timing and pacing are also very comparable. But for some reason, and maybe it's the incredibly detailed WW2-era production value and cinematography, but Inglourious Basterds makes Tarantino feel more fresh and vivid than he has since the first Kill Bill . To the great benefit of the film, there are no actors present who have stared in past Tarantino films. That is except for a couple short, somewhat necessary voiceovers from Samuel L. Jackson and Harvey Keitel, and a small role for Hostel -director/semi-actor Eli Roth, who shines in the sinister role of one of Lt. Aldo Raine's (Brad Pitt) Jewish hit squad, nicknamed the ‘Bear Jew' because he brutally beats Nazis to death using a Louisville Slugger (this is not a … [Read more...]

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Movie Review

benjamin-button1

By Jeff The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a spectacular meditation on time, love, and loss. Haunting. Mythic. Without hesitation the most moving and intricately crafted film of the year two thousand and eight, Benjamin Button is a beautiful tale every person on Earth can easily relate to if they simply allow themselves to confront the painful reality of our impending mortality. A child (Brad Pitt) is born "under unusual circumstances" -- and ages backwards, transforming before the audience's eyes (with the incredible help of a great make-up team and newly-designed digital effects) from a shrively old baby, to dashing ‘middle-aged' teenager, to a hot young stud in his late 60s, and eventually to becoming a....well, you'll see. He meets an array of fascinating characters (played by a very talented cast) during his unique journey, but struggles his whole life to fit in and to connect with his first true love, the fire-haired Daisy (Cate Blanchet), … [Read more...]

Burn After Reading Movie Review

burn-after-reading-poster1

OR "Return After Renting" By Jeff "We came up with the idea for Burn After Reading actually just thinking about parts that we might want to write for actors that we knew that might be fun to throw together" - Ethan Coen And, unfortunately, this is why in the Coen brother's masterful career resume, Burn After Reading falls in the low end of the barrel. Despite giving the Coen brothers their biggest opening box-office draw and their first #1 weekend (two statistics which I can assure you the Coens care n-o-t-h-i-n-g about), Burn After Reading represents the two brothers working on an ‘auto-pilot' level, which we've seen them do before in the past few years (see Intolerable Cruelty , The Ladykillers ). These so-so films carry all the distinct characteristics associated with the work of the Coens. You could see a one-minute clip and recognize it's written and directed by them simply by the dialogue, pacing and efficient camerawork that Joel and Ethan … [Read more...]
