Dragons of Babel Book Review

dragons of Babel DH

By Eddy I have read enough Fantasy novels lately to start getting sick of them.  I know all the hardcore nerds ( I can say this, I am one of them) are gasping with shock, but I had enough of underdog kid/small person going on long and perilous journey to save the world from Evil incarnate.  Whenever this happens I tend to drift into other genres such as action/thriller or horror books, but after reading the back cover of Michael Swanwick’s The Dragons of Babel, I decided to put everything down and start reading immediately. Thank God I did.  This is by no means your typical fantasy book.  Remove all thoughts of your preconceived notions of places such as Avalon, Faerie and Babel.  Swanwick’s novel twists and darkens this places we usually connect with beautiful and shinny faces.  He creates a world that is a clash between our modern industrial society with the legendary places of fairytales. The result is a land that is capable of awe inspiring beauty in one location … [Read more...]

The Alloy of Law Book Review

alloy of law DH

By Eddy For people just getting into fantasy books, it is pretty daunting choosing what books to read. If you go online, and search for top fantasy books you are inundated with hundreds of titles and series.   Of course, there are the old standards such as Tolkien and Jordan etcetera and frankly these are the best for a reason.  Yet, the real problem is finding the next great Fantasy writer. Determining this isn’t an easy task and to list out all the criteria would be impossible.  Yet, I would like to humbly submit the name of Brandon Sanderson as possible suitor for the title.  The corner stone for any contender has to be a great book series (notice that I didn’t say just one book, to be the best lightning has to strike more than once).  In Sanderson’s case, the Mistborn trilogy fits the bill.  As far as I am concerned it is his calling card, and for me the first series that I mention to anyone looking to expand beyond the old standby’s in fantasy. Recently … [Read more...]

NY Comic Con Thursday Rundown

NYCC 1

By Eddy Just got back from NY Comic Con (NYCC) and boy are my legs killing me.  It is not a fun walk from Grand Central to the Javitz Center, everything looks so close from google maps on my iphone.  Though I can’t help but feel worse for some of the other people walking with me still in total costume.  In New York City you see all types of crazy stuff, but for some reason it doesn’t prepare you for seeing grown men dressed as their favorite anime character (maybe my skin isn’t thick enough yet). Even on a “preview” day, the Jacob Javitz center was buzzing with activity. The day was supposedly open for press, exhibitors and VIP’s but I definitely saw 4 day ticket owners there as well. Though they added to the chaos, I was able to get a couple of glimpses of the costumes that make going to NYCC a fun event.  Yet, even as I write this I know that the crowds on Thursday will be nothing like that on Friday and Saturday, it doesn’t even compare.  A little tip … [Read more...]

NFL.com/Fantasy Review

nfl.com-fantasy

By Eddy Last week marked the start of the NFL season; an important event in most men’s live.  Yet this weekend also marked another important event (Please remember this is all outside the realm of the anniversary of 9/11, I don’t think it warrants mentioning that the remembrance of that event supersedes everything I have been talking about) and that is the start of fantasy football season.  It seems that the popularity of the latter has increased to a point that it is celebrated just as reverently as the NFL season. For the last 5 or 6 years a group of my fraternity brothers have had a fantasy football league.  One of the hardest things that I have found was deciding one which website to host it on. There are so many out there.  In fact, even when you chose one, you may end up switching by the end of the year.  So far our league has switched 2 times.  Outside of my fraternity league I have had the opportunity to check out league sites on yahoo, CBS sportsline and … [Read more...]
