(Video) Iron Man 3 Movie Review

Iron_Man_3_theatrical_poster

While we were at Disney, I got a chance to catch Iron Man 3.  This is the first Iron Man not directed by Jon Favreau.  Instead, Shane Black the screen writer of the Lethal Weapon movies, or as I happen to know him:  one of the Special Forces guys that get killed in the first Predator movie.  Either way, he obviously brings his own flavor to the movie, emphasizing Tony Stark’s (played by Robert Downey Jr.) wit and adding a more comic feel. Check out the official trailer from Marvel If you were looking for an “Iron Man” movie then you are looking in the wrong place.  Iron Man 3 really centers on Tony Stark and his struggles outside of the famous armor. The circumstances after The Avengers movie have left him with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and he can’t seem to pull himself together.  So if you are a big fan of Robert Downy Jr.  then you are going to get your dollars’ worth.  As he is forced for most of the movie to fight his way through bad guys like the Mandarin … [Read more...]

(Video) Rise of the Guardians DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Review

return-guardians-blu

i The Rise of The Guardians comes out on Blu-Ray and DVD on March 12, 2013.  The Dancing Hotdogs had a wonderful movie night at home to check out the film and have one of our patented family movie nights.  What’s better than watching a fun movie eating some popcorn and other snacks with the entire on the couch together?  D and I have to take advantage of this time while we can, before the boys become too embarrassed to hang out with us. The Rise of the Guardians was created by the same team that gave us the hit DreamWorks film: How to Train Your Dragon. Based on a novel by William Joyce, The Rise of the Guardians uses some of our favorite holiday characters such as Santa (Alec Baldwin) the Tooth Fairy (Isa Fischer) and the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), who act as guardians for the world’s children against the evil of the bogeyman. Amidst this battle we are treated to the heartfelt adventure centering on the mischievous and ultimately lonely Jack Frost (Chris Pine) who … [Read more...]

For Dads:Journey 2: The Mysterious Island #BlurayElite Review #SP

journey 2

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu-Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: Journey 2: the Mysterious Island Finally a kids movie, though not an obvious classic this is one of those wonderful time wasters that grab kids attention and doesn't let it go for almost 2 hours.  A sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, the movie exchanges Brendan Fraser for the The Rock and follow the adventures of the Andersons as they try to find the Mysterious Island depicted in books such as Treasure Island and Gulliver’s Travels. In my mind ,this is the spiritual successor to Honey I Shrunk the Kids, as the inhabitants of the island are all reversed in size, therefore big animals are small and small animals are enormous leading to dinosaur like insects and reptiles.  Oh yeah, there is definitely a bee flying scene as well. Dad Factor: medium/low: While there is … [Read more...]

For Dads: Horrible Bosses #BlurayElite Review #SP

Horrible Bosses

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu-Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: Horrible Bosses Who wouldn’t want to kill an awful boss.  Horrible Bosses is an underrated comedy, while not ridiculously inventive or even great for that matter there is enough meat on the bones of this movie that I find the movie pretty re-watchable.  With outlandish performances from Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell the movie has you rooting for our heroes to get their revenge. Dad Factor: High.  This movie was made for adults to watch.  This is a definite only for the scene with Jennifer Aniston as a inappropriate dentist.  Add in Colin Farrell with his Bill Murray from Kingpin style hair and tiger robes are totally unforgettable. Kid Factor: Not until they are a bit older (meaning when they are at least teenagers) and even that is a bit of … [Read more...]

For Dads: Gone With the Wind #BlurayElite Review #SP

Gone with the Wind DH

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: Gone With the Wind It may be weird to say but this was the first time I ever watched Gone With the Wind.  It seems like since the film is so ingrained in our culture I should have seen it at some point in the past 30 years of my existence.  One thing that might have contributed to that is the fact that the movie is almost 4 hours long.  If you are keeping track, Gone With the Wind is the #4 movie in the AFI top 100. Taking place a little before the civil war in the US the movie follows the life and loves of Scarlet O’Hara as war breaks out between the states, and her life in the south during these difficult times. In addition, it is an interesting glimpse of family life and drama in the south.  Dad Factor: Low.  While a classic movie, most Dad’s are not going to find … [Read more...]

For Dads: Casablanca #BlurayElite Review #SP

casablanca DH

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: Casablanca We now move into the Classics portion of the our reviews.  If you haven’t at least heard of Casablanca then I really feel bad for you.  During a brief period in college, Divina and I were really into watching as many of the American Film Institute’s top 100 films.  Perennially in the top 5 movies in history, Casablanca is one of the few films in my opinion from that era which really holds up today.  Since WWII has been co-opted as the background for so many movies over the years you can almost forget that this was filmed during the actual war.  The performances are top rate and most importantly the story of Humphrey Bogart’s Rick Blaine (the original Han Solo) and Ingrid Bergman’s IIsa during this time of unrest still has the ability to affect … [Read more...]

For Dads: Safe House Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Review and Sweepstakes

Safe_House_Poster

UPDATE: Giveaway is closed.  Congrats to the five winners. Not all Dad’s need to be cinemaphiles, basically if you add enough action and explosions we will watch anything once.  If you need evidence of this you need only look at the long and illustrious careers of Sly Stallone, Van Damme, Schwarzenegger…basically everyone who has appeared in Expendables 1 and 2.  When I sat down to watch Safe House I came into it wanting to chill out and watch some good old fashion action.  Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington do a great job as a CIA babysitter and the most dangerous man in the world respectively.  Reynolds must keep Washington alive while avoiding getting killed himself by either Washington or the other guys pursuing them. The plot is not that original, you can see this type “buddying” of two opposite characters from comedies to drama reaching all the way back to the 60s.   Therefore, there this only so much that can be done by the actors, none the less with … [Read more...]

For Dads: The Matrix #Bluray Elite Review

The Matrix Blu Ray

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: The Matrix I can still remember the first time I saw The Matrix in the theaters, I couldn't imagine ever seeing anything better ever again. It had everything I loved martial arts, science fiction, it was highly stylized and original.  On Blu ray the movie looks even better than I remember it, it is fantastic add in the great sound track it is a fully immersive experience. Dad Factor: High.  Like I already said before, the story is great and the action is even better.  Even if the sci-fi quasi religious plot does do it for you, there is plenty for dads to geek out about. Kid Factor: Low.  Depends on age, most boys would love the fight scenes and the visuals, but the story might go over their head.  Not recommended for younger children due to the violence and … [Read more...]

We Bought A Zoo DVD Review

We Bought a Zoo DH

It seems like there has been a trend of “based on a True Story” style movies that progressively become less and less believable every year.  When I heard that We bought a Zoo was a similar styled movie, I honestly had to call B.S. Who in their right mind wants to buy a zoo? Considering how many homeless dogs and cats there are in the world (cue Sarah McLachlan song and Divina sobbing in the background) there seems to be a number of good reasons why people shouldn’t take care of domestic animals not to mention wild ones. With those very poignant thoughts in my head I sat down with the family to watch We Bought a Zoo, staring Matt Damon as the widower Ben Mee and Scarlett Johansson as the head zoo keeper Kelly.  The story revolves around Ben Mee purchasing a large house with a zoo in the back year.  Ben takes on this burden with the help of his family and Kelly and tries to get the zoo back on its feet.  There are the obligatory ups and downs, including escaped animals … [Read more...]

Haywire Movie Review

haywire DH

By Eddy My God what have I just watched?  I have returned to my hotel room after watching the movie Haywire and I had to start writing the review.  I couldn’t bear to think about the movie any long than I had too.  Believe me, I will be taking a long shower after this…and I am not ruling out crying it out in the fetal position while I am there. Steven Soderbergh has taken the Ocean's movie formula way too far. Just because it worked more or less with those comic caper movies doesn’t mean it will work all the time, it also helped to have the full star power and charm of Brad Pitt and George Clooney.   While not lacking in stars (Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxon, Channing Tatum, Micheal Fassbender and Michael Douglas  all of whom mailed in their performances)the movie in its purest essence is a revenge film ala Death Wish and therefore needs a bit more that a couple of stars mugging for the camera it needs to have an actual story.  It honestly felt that the … [Read more...]
