For Dads: Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth Kinect Review

Avengers Battle for Earth

It has almost become cliché to say that serious games on the Kinect are far and few between.  It becomes even rarer to see a fighting game on any motion based game system be more than a boring exercise of flaying around and frustration.  While Marvel Avengers Battle for Earth isn’t perfect, it has been the most enjoyable and exciting game to recently come out on the Kinect. Developed by Ubisoft Quebec, Marvel Avengers Battle for Earth provides a game that both families and hardcore gamers can at least enjoy together.  Based on the comic book story line of the Secret Invasion, where a group of aliens basically play “body snatchers” with marvel’s stable of superheroes.  No one knows who the real heroes are and who are fakes, resulting in epic battle between many of the legendary heroes. The game has 8 game modes: Campaign- This consist of over 40 battles with cinematics retelling the Secret Invasion story. Arcade- players must defeat all the other characters in … [Read more...]

Kinect: Disneyland Adventures Review and Sweepstakes

Boxshot Wizard file used for creating global boxshots

Update! This giveaway is closed. Congrats to the winners! We at Dancing Hotdogs love Disney, but sometimes it is hard to make the pilgrimage to the Magic Kingdom. Thankfully, Xbox and Microsoft have brought us the next best thing: Kinect: Disneyland Adventures. Imagine being able to travel around the famous Disney park without having to purchase a plane ticket or a parkhopper pass. Kinect Disneyland Adventure allows you to emmerse yourself into the Disney world.  You are able to travel (or fly) around the park going on different rides.  By rides I mean actually becoming a part of the adventure…most importantly not waiting in lines.  Rock and I were able to fight Captain Hook alongside Peter Pan and battle in the high seas against the Pirates of the Caribbean, but the game is not all action.  Some of the famous attractions you are able to playing in: ·         Alice in Wonderland ·         Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ·         Buzz … [Read more...]

(video) Star Wars Kinect Review and Sweepstake

kinect-starwars-DH

Update: Congrats to the winners. To some older fans of Star Wars, this might be going against the grain a bit, but I really liked Star Wars Kinect.  Yes you can head on to the internet and check read how it doesn’t have this…or it doesn’t have that…but the main point that most of the reviewers are forgetting is that this game is for kids.  Not only was it accessible for Rock, who is almost 4, to play competently in the game, but I was able to have a great time submerging myself in the fun.  In my opinion there are more hits than misses in the game. Star Wars Kinect is a game divided into 4 smaller games.  I hesitate to call them mini games because they are much longer than what you would expect in a mini game compilation.  In addition, most of the games can be played by two people at the same time except for the pod racing game. The sections of the games are as follows: Jedi Destiny:  this is the mode everyone was waiting for.  Playing as a Padawan (Jedi … [Read more...]

Appgear Foam Fighters App review

Augmented Reality is the new hit among portable games. With the technology available on Iphone/Ipads and Android phones/tablets it is great to see games take advantage of the unique experience these devices provide.  Yet with any new tech for games, it is only as good as the game itself.  I had the opportunity to try one of these new generation of AR games: Appgear’s Foam Fighter. Basically bringing the Air Combat simulation to the next level, Foam Fighter combines Augmented Reality with the physical world.  Players can download the game and start playing immediately (demo only unfortunately), or they can pick up the foam fighters, aptly named as they are miniature airplanes made of foam.  When attached to your phone or tablet by a small arm with a suction cup, the game will scan the plane opening up new campaigns specific to the plane.  I had the chance to try out the Battle of Britain.  Missions were pretty varied from destroying select buildings as targets or full … [Read more...]

(Video) Xbox Kinect Rush: A Disney/Pixar Adventure Party & Giveaway Sweepstakes

Rush Disney Pixar Adventure XBOX 360 Kinect game

Update: This Giveaway Sweepstakes is Closed congrats to the winners!  What kid is going to say no to a party that includes Disney/Pixar favorites The Incredibles, Toy Story, Cars, Ratatouille and Up?  I definitely know what the answer was in the Dancing Hotdogs home.  When we found that we were going to have an opportunity to try out the new Kinect game Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure (A actual review of the game will be coming up), we jumped at the chance.  We invited all the kids we knew and had a huge bash.  Honestly, I didn’t even know we knew so many children, I am pretty sure a couple just snuck in before we closed the door.  In order to accommodate the crowd we had to have playtime outside, and bring in the kids almost one at a time inside to play the game.  Any of you who have Kinect will agree how difficult it is to play with a whole bunch of children all at the same time.  You definitely run into the problem of people walking in the way or looking to … [Read more...]

For Dads: Rocksmith

Eddy's Guitar Misty

Most times dads get the short end of the stick.  As caretakers and head of households we put the needs of the family before our own.  This feeling is so deeply ingrained into our DNA that it has become universal fact that Dads are the most difficult to buy presents for.  It’s like we are some weird alien species…”oh, another tie or hammer for father’s day, this is perfect fuel for my space ship!”  With that said, this series of posts are for all dads. Just interesting things that I have found that may appeal to others from my home planet. Dad Fact (“Scientific” knowledge to wow the family from: Dad the smartest man in the universe;  Because Dad is the smartest man in the world):  ·         Did you know I was in a band?  They were called The Rolling Stones, I had to quit though when your mom had you! ·         Most toilets flush in E flat ·         You can tune a guitar using a phone dial tone. Most of us dream of being a … [Read more...]

Motion sports: Adrenaline Video Game Review

motion sports DH

By Eddy Kinect games are a double edge sword.  Make things too difficult and you risk alienating kids who make up the bulk of the population that play games, dumb it down too much and face the ridicule of gamers and critics alike.  Obviously balance on the line of these two sides is not easy, as you can see from the second generation of Kinect games currently floating around.  Therefore, it is tough to judge Motion Sports: Adrenaline.  One hand the controls are so basic and rudimentary that we might as well have a wiimote in our hands, but it ease of use has allowed younger gamers who have played it to be able to play a “big boy” game.  Also to its benefit is that Motion Sports steps away from cartoon style visuals and moves toward more realistic images which also gives the game a more grown up feel. The game itself boast 6 different extreme sports: mountain biking, kayaking, kite-surfing, wing suit gliding, rock climbing and skiing, each relying on movements by the … [Read more...]
