Skylanders SWAP Force Toy Fair Event

Activision Publishing, Inc. CEO Eric Hirshberg sharing the big news. Image courtesy of Skylanders Last week, I got the opportunity to check out the premier of the newest edition of the hit video game series: Skylander SWAP force.  Held at the NASDAQ center in New York City, the event was part of Activision’s and Toys R US’s effort to celebrate the success of the Skylander brand and the premier of the SWAP force line of toys and game.   As a part of this event, the NYC  Toys R Us store was giving away a new Skylander’s Giants character: Ninjini. The biggest new feature for the game is the ability to customize the unique powers of the SWAP force figures. Check out the official trailer. This “swap-ability” is accomplished through the ability to split the characters in two, allowing the player to switch the halves between various characters.  With 16 different characters, there are over 250 different combinations possible.  When the new combo is placed on … [Read more...]

(Video) Kinect Sesame Street Review

XBOX 360 Kinect Sesame Street

It seems like most video games even though they are for “kids” it seem the parents end up playing the game more than the children.  This is especially apparent when playing video games for small children.  Some of has to do with the fact that little kids sometimes want to watch what is happening on the screen without having to worry about playing the game.  Throw in the fact that the Kinect requires you to be so physical when playing game, and you can imagine how difficult it could be for kids just learning coordination to really enjoy the story. Kinect Sesame Street really solves this issue.  Rather than being a video game in the traditional sense, Kinect Sesame Street brings your child into the actual show. Kinect Sesame Street was built especially for young children focusing on:          Promoting literacy and math          Modeling scientific inquiry skills          Fostering social and emotional development Can you imagine … [Read more...]

(Video) D.W.’s Unicorn Adventure App Review

D.W. Unicorn adventure app

Healthy eating is essential, and contrary to television kids do like to eat vegetables.  Rock for one, is a huge fan of vegetables.  Honestly, he loves them so much I could imagine him becoming a vegetarian when he gets older.  Coming from a family of meat eaters the concept is just crazy.  Even if your little one(s) are not as avid vegetable eaters as Rock, it still never hurts to start building healthy eating habits early.  The key  is  making it fun! One way to do this is by incorporating games which focus on helping kids recognize healthy foods.  We had the fortunate opportunity to try out one of PBS kids latest apps: D.W.’s Unicorn Adventure.  For those of you not familiar with D.W., she is the little sister to the most famous aardvark I know Arthur. Developed especially for kids aged 4-6, Children must help D.W. save a unicorn by using the power of health food, more specifically Rainbow foods (vegetables of various colors like strawberries, plums, egg plant, … [Read more...]

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster Video Game Review

Once upon a monster logo

By Eddy Parents pull out those wallets.  If you have an Xbox 360 Kinect and little children you no doubt have a similar issue that I encounter often.  There aren’t very many games that are worth playing with your children on the Kinect.  Don’t get me wrong, good games for the Kinect do exist, it is just that they are far and few between.  The ultimate result is that the Xbox ends up being an expensive dust collector.  This is especially true with games targeted to children Rock’s age (3 years), whose short attention span and lack of coordination make it difficult for games on the system to be fun over a long period of time. Thankfully, games like Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster are being released.  Check out the video. The Once Upon a Monster has a couple of things going for it: First, it puts you and your child in the place of some of the more famous characters in Sesame Street, such as Elmo and Cookie Monster.  Second, the actions and movement are … [Read more...]

PowerUp Heroes Video Game Review

DH PowerUP Heroes

By Eddy Exclusively for the Xbox Kinect, PowerUp Heroes takes the first step in giving players the feeling that they are a super hero.  Yet the elation of super powers is fleeting as the game runs into a number of barriers that make it a tougher sell for adults, more specifically, an extremely short single player campaign, repetitive game play and a lack of complexity.  Even with me saying that, I still found myself satisfyingly addicted to the game...because what guy in their right mind wouldn't want to be a superhero! PowerUp Heroes puts you in a series of battle against other super beings, all powered by a unique suit.  The game has the standard kicking and punch combat, but in order to spice things up players are able to perform a series of movements inorder to execute a special power move unique to the suit you are wearing.  Each suit is earned by defeating an opponent (FYI this is all in the single player mode).  There are 20 suits in total, each with 3 special … [Read more...]

D3 Publisher Media Preview Event

White Knight 2

By Eddy Not to long ago, I had the opportunity to attend an event held by D3 Publisher (at Justin Timberlake’s Restaurant in NYC no less) to see a couple of their up and coming titles. If you don’t recognize D3 don’t worry, they are a small publisher but if you have children ranging from 7-13 you likely have a couple of their games in your home.  They specialize in creating a number of licensed games for popular shows such as Victorious and Ben 10. Here were some of the titles that they were showing at the event: VICTORiOUS: Time to Shine This game was the rawest, which isn’t surprising since it was the Pre-Pre-Pre Beta version of the game.  Either way, the big draw of the game is tobe a part of the student body of Hollywood Arts High School from the popular Nickelodeon show starting Victoria Justice. The game which will be available for the Xbox 360, … [Read more...]

Carnival Games: Monkey See, Monkey Do XBOX 360 video game review

Carnival Games

By Divina and Eddy A few weeks ago Big Bro, my youngest sister, Baby Bro and I attended an event in the city to review the latest XBOX 360 Kinect family game.  We loved it! We got a chance to meet Barker and hang out with some friends.  Below is Eddy’s full review on the game. - Divina What is the worst thing about Carnivals?  Is it the Carnie folk?  The stomach churning combination of smells like vomit and fried dough or is it the crowds of kids and family all over the place.  Well if these things or any other thing that I didn’t mention bother you then Carnival Games: Monkey See, Monkey Do for the Xbox 360 and Kinect is for you.  2K Play has put together 20 of your favorite Carnival games in one package including a couple of interesting new ones, without the worry of one of the Carnie folk stealing your child. Add on top of that, that 2K Play actually want you to win the games that you are playing so you don’t have to worry about the usually rigging of the … [Read more...]

Handy Manny iphone App review

mzl_hygexqfa_480x480-75

By Eddy So far the Handy Manny iphone app has been both a blessing and a curse.  Babyboy loves it, the five activities keeps him happy and busy to no end.  The only problem is that now that he has played it a couple of time, every time I pull out the iphone I get assailed with "Manny, Manny, I want to play Manny".  It is getting to the point that I can't check my emails in front of him. The app comes with 5 activities: 1) Color it- which allows the little one to color various Handy Manny drawings. Kids are also able to save their art work on the iphone for later use or display. 2) Find it- This game has the kids try to find all of Manny's tools in his work shop. This one is Babyboy's favorite game. I have played it a couple of time as well. … [Read more...]
