Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lighting Thief Movie Review

By Eddy For Percy Jackson and the Olympians, D and I were hoping for a type of Harry Potter but with Greek Gods instead of Witches (I am pretty sure that the movie executives had a similar box office results in mind as well).  I am sure people who actually read the popular series of books scream that the two series are nothing alike.  Yet when you consider a story that has a young boy with an abusive caretaker, who is an outsider in his normal world but super special in the secret world that he is introduced to at the beginning of the film, who then goes out with two other friends to accomplish a seemingly impossible goal and solve some kind of mystery, of which they of course do using everything they had learned recently. Now, what does that story line remind you off?  Harry Potter , well you don't say! Now just add Greek Gods instead of witches, demi-gods instead of students and Camp Half Blood instead of Hogwarts and you have Percy Jackson and the Olympians (makes you … [Read more...]

Public Enemies Movie Review

Has Director Michael Mann lost his marbles or transgressed to a whole new level? By Jeff What a divider this one has been. Critics and moviegoers have either been all-for-it (New York Times' Manohla Dargis, Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Wells, Roger Ebert, the majority of my friends), or simply impressed by the high level of historical production value but ultimately unswayed and unsatisfied by the hi-def camera action employed throughout and powerful but somewhat silent and muted script phrasings. No other director I have ever watched has as gradually enveloped me as much in his vision, upon repeated viewings, as Michael Mann (and maybe David Lynch). Mann's other primarily cited masterpieces, Manhunter , The Last of the Mohicans and yes, 1995's Heat , were all met by critics and audiences alike largely with ambivalent or negative reactions upon original release Today, Heat is considered one of the top 10 best films of the 1990s. With his last two films, the … [Read more...]

Young Frankenstein Broadway Review

young-frankenstein

By Eddy Dancing hotdogs was graciously invited for a viewing of the Broadway show "Young Frankenstein" not too long ago.  While we were unable to go, it did spur me to write a review of the same show we saw a couple of weeks ago (To think if I had held out a little longer I could have watched it for free.  My wallet is crying) I first became familiar with the Broadway show on Thanksgiving or Christmas of last year.  In one of the lame T.V. specials that the channel was having, they had a couple of live performances from the casts of various Broadway shows.  The ones that stood out were "Young Frankenstein" and "Xanadu".  Each one made a definite impression.  Xanadu's performance of flowing spandex and roller skates, made me want to bash my face into the T.V. just to make the horrid images and sounds stop. I haven't seen the show, so it really could be good or something, but that performance left me so turned off that I could not even look at my … [Read more...]

Twilight Movie Review

twilight1

By Rosa Fathers, husbands, brothers, and boyfriends STAY HOME!!!  Unless you want to score major brownie points for watching Twilight, go watch another movie that shows at the same time.  Eddy actually stayed home with the baby while Divina, our younger sister and I went to see the movie. TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl and a vampire. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. ...  The modern day love story with a twist is about a teenager girl, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and a vampire boy, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).  The movie is based on the best selling series that concluded this past summer.  Twilight is a first book of the four series which is filled with fantasy, love, action, shape shifters and vampires.  We have our Bella Swan moving to a small town in Washington State and having her world completely … [Read more...]
