For Dads:Journey 2: The Mysterious Island #BlurayElite Review #SP

journey 2

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu-Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: Journey 2: the Mysterious Island Finally a kids movie, though not an obvious classic this is one of those wonderful time wasters that grab kids attention and doesn't let it go for almost 2 hours.  A sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, the movie exchanges Brendan Fraser for the The Rock and follow the adventures of the Andersons as they try to find the Mysterious Island depicted in books such as Treasure Island and Gulliver’s Travels. In my mind ,this is the spiritual successor to Honey I Shrunk the Kids, as the inhabitants of the island are all reversed in size, therefore big animals are small and small animals are enormous leading to dinosaur like insects and reptiles.  Oh yeah, there is definitely a bee flying scene as well. Dad Factor: medium/low: While there is … [Read more...]

For Dads: Casablanca #BlurayElite Review #SP

casablanca DH

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: Casablanca We now move into the Classics portion of the our reviews.  If you haven’t at least heard of Casablanca then I really feel bad for you.  During a brief period in college, Divina and I were really into watching as many of the American Film Institute’s top 100 films.  Perennially in the top 5 movies in history, Casablanca is one of the few films in my opinion from that era which really holds up today.  Since WWII has been co-opted as the background for so many movies over the years you can almost forget that this was filmed during the actual war.  The performances are top rate and most importantly the story of Humphrey Bogart’s Rick Blaine (the original Han Solo) and Ingrid Bergman’s IIsa during this time of unrest still has the ability to affect … [Read more...]

For Dads: The Matrix #Bluray Elite Review

The Matrix Blu Ray

As a member of Warner Home Video super exclusive Blu Ray Elite team, I get access to some of the greatest movies ever made. My mission is to give you how these movies fit in the life of a Dad. Movie: The Matrix I can still remember the first time I saw The Matrix in the theaters, I couldn't imagine ever seeing anything better ever again. It had everything I loved martial arts, science fiction, it was highly stylized and original.  On Blu ray the movie looks even better than I remember it, it is fantastic add in the great sound track it is a fully immersive experience. Dad Factor: High.  Like I already said before, the story is great and the action is even better.  Even if the sci-fi quasi religious plot does do it for you, there is plenty for dads to geek out about. Kid Factor: Low.  Depends on age, most boys would love the fight scenes and the visuals, but the story might go over their head.  Not recommended for younger children due to the violence and … [Read more...]

24-Hour Disney Junior Channel Coming Today

Disney Junior DH

If you have children below the age of 7, then you are familiar with Disney Junior. Up until today , Disney Junior was a block of programming targeting younger children with shows that would play in the morning and mid afternoon. For Rock, the highlight of this block was the Peter Pan themed Jake and the Neverland Pirates, but the block also included The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Handy Manny among others. Starting today, this block will be expended to an entire channel devoted to younger Disney fans. Among the many new shows to premier on the channel will be Doc McStuffins and Quiet Is…This past week we received a special preview of these shows and they were a big hit in the Dancing Hotdogs household. Doc McStuffins is already being requested by Rock. The show centers on a young girl, who uses the lessons and skills she learns from her mother (a doctor) to help and heal toys and stuffed animals. The show has a great message about helping others as well as the benefits of … [Read more...]

Real Steel DVD & Blu Ray Review

real_steel dh

By Eddy Hello Reader!  Do you or some child you know love Robots? Yes, well this movie is for you.  Do you or some Husband you know like boxing? Yes, well this movie is for you.  Do you or some wife you know love the glistening muscles of Hugh Jackman? Yes, well this movie is for you.  It looks like the movie Gods tried to have their cake and eat it too, the only thing that would make it complete would be inclusion of a pretty girls…oh hi Evangeline Lilly.  Coming out on DVD and Blu Ray today, Blue Steel tries to cater to everyone’s needs and tastes.  While I don’t think it accomplishes its goal the movie certainly wraps it in a pretty exciting package.  Real Steel follows the story of Charlie Kenton and his son Max who train a forgotten fighting robot to face the ultimate Robot champion.  I will have to say that I didn’t have too much hope for this movie, but during the culminating battle Rock and I were on our feet jumping.  It hard not to root for the … [Read more...]

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Movie Review

Mission Impossible DH

By Eddy Other than the straight to DVD title MI:GP fulfills all the promises of action that we expected from series.  Director Brad Bird had a lot to live up to after his hit The Incredibles.  As a fan of the Pixar film I was interested in finding out what he could do when constrained by this such as the law of gravity and physics.  Add in the drop in interest in the last two Mission Impossible films as well as Tom Cruise’s well known antics, this appeared to be the makings of a possible explosive combination and not in a good way.  The first and foremost thing about the movie is that it is all about ACTION, everything else is just a vehicle to move us to the next action sequence.  As far as plot goes, MI:GP fall behind the other movies.  I would not be surprised if they just adapted one of the episodes from the 1970’s show, the whole “save the world from a nuclear war with Russia” was played out in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s and while I lived a part of my life … [Read more...]

NY Comic Con Thursday Rundown

NYCC 1

By Eddy Just got back from NY Comic Con (NYCC) and boy are my legs killing me.  It is not a fun walk from Grand Central to the Javitz Center, everything looks so close from google maps on my iphone.  Though I can’t help but feel worse for some of the other people walking with me still in total costume.  In New York City you see all types of crazy stuff, but for some reason it doesn’t prepare you for seeing grown men dressed as their favorite anime character (maybe my skin isn’t thick enough yet). Even on a “preview” day, the Jacob Javitz center was buzzing with activity. The day was supposedly open for press, exhibitors and VIP’s but I definitely saw 4 day ticket owners there as well. Though they added to the chaos, I was able to get a couple of glimpses of the costumes that make going to NYCC a fun event.  Yet, even as I write this I know that the crowds on Thursday will be nothing like that on Friday and Saturday, it doesn’t even compare.  A little tip … [Read more...]

Super 8 Movie Review

Super 8

By Eddy Leading up to the premier of Super 8, nobody really knew what the movie was about.  There was so much secrecy; it was if it was the next Star Wars movie or something.  It got to be ridiculous, and a bit self important. I was pretty sure that this movie wasn’t going to save the world or anything and I fairly certain Steven Spielberg wasn’t going to donate his share of the profits to hungry orphans so why the big hush, hush, why make it such a secret.  To this day I couldn’t tell you why.   Yeah it was a cute movie and all, but I don’t think knowing anything about the plot or creature made this movie any worse or any better.  It was Cloverfield all over again, just a little less disappointing. Before I went into the theater, I kept on hearing from those who had watched the film that it was a lot like Goonies in the sense that a group of kids go on a fantastic adventure.  For the most part it is true, there is a group of kids and there is adventure, just none … [Read more...]
