For Dads: Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth Kinect Review

Avengers Battle for Earth

It has almost become cliché to say that serious games on the Kinect are far and few between.  It becomes even rarer to see a fighting game on any motion based game system be more than a boring exercise of flaying around and frustration.  While Marvel Avengers Battle for Earth isn’t perfect, it has been the most enjoyable and exciting game to recently come out on the Kinect. Developed by Ubisoft Quebec, Marvel Avengers Battle for Earth provides a game that both families and hardcore gamers can at least enjoy together.  Based on the comic book story line of the Secret Invasion, where a group of aliens basically play “body snatchers” with marvel’s stable of superheroes.  No one knows who the real heroes are and who are fakes, resulting in epic battle between many of the legendary heroes. The game has 8 game modes: Campaign- This consist of over 40 battles with cinematics retelling the Secret Invasion story. Arcade- players must defeat all the other characters in … [Read more...]

(Video) Marvel Reads: Spiderman: An Origin Story App Review

spiderman app

A new Spiderman movie is set to come out this summer with a different spin on the entire story.  What better way to prepare for the debut than to brush up on the original story from Marvel.  Of course, if you are an adult it isn’t that difficult to pick up or download a version of the original comic. For children it is a bit harder relating to a story created back in the early 60s.  Thankfully, Marvel has brought the story to a generation through Spiderman: An Origin Story App.  Formatted in the same way as the Avenger Assemble! and Hulk app, iPhone/iPad users are treated to an interactive story told by Stan Lee on one of his most famous characters. Designed for all ages (not just kids) the story is brought to life with interactive games and puzzles.  Check out Rock and I having some webslinging fun: Available in French, Italian, German, Spanish and Danish, the app can be found here on iTunes for $3.99 which to me is definitely worth it considering the repeated use that … [Read more...]

Disney’s Peter Pan App Review

Lately the exploits of high flying superheroes such as Thor and Iron, spiderman and the Hulk seems to be everywhere we look. It is no surprise that many kids want to be just like these heroes when they grow up. Yet, lost amongst the high testosterone and flashy action is the exploits of one hero that was no longer grabbing children’s imaginations. Thankfully to the popularity of shows like Jake and The Never Land Pirates and this App, Peter Pan is returning to the public spotlight. Not many children would argue joining the lost boys and fighting against the evil Captain Hook alongside Peter Pan. Now Children can realize the magic of Peter’s and Tinkerbell’s story through the iPad. Illustrated to resemble a book from an older era, after watching the story unfold I realized that Peter Pan, like he always wanted remains timeless. Sprinkled throughout out the story are various animations and mini games that serve to add to the magic rather than take away from it. Check out the … [Read more...]

The Incredible Hulk: An Origin Story Book Review

holiday gift guide incredible hulk

By Eddy In the past comic books have introduced the likes of Spiderman, Captain America and the Hulk to younger generation, unfortunately, comics have been in a steep decline.  In order to keep this tradition alive Disney Press and Marvel have created a series of books that introduce the origins of each of their more famous superheroes.  These heroes include Spiderman, the X-men, Captain America, Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. We recently received from Disney Publishing The Incredible Hulk: An Origin Story.  I noticed a couple of things: ·         The book is laid out like a regular story book, no complicated comic book style boxes to navigate. ·         The story is straight forward and concise.  This books is an introduction for younger kids.  Keeping in this framework the violence is very subdued, don’t get me wrong the Hulk smashes his fair share of stuff but it is kept tasteful and appropriate enough to read to a 3 year … [Read more...]

Thor Movie Review

Thor Movie Poster

By Eddy Not bad Marvel, not bad at all.  Considering all that could have gone wrong (ala Wolverine) along with a director not experienced with Large popcorn action flicks (ala Ang Lee with Hulk) Thor rise the ranks of the comic book movie Patheon to arrive somewhere below the first Spiderman and above the second Iron Man.  Both movies were well received and in the case of Spiderman broke records, but when taken in full perspective of all the movies out there fails to reach the lofty heights of Spiderman 2 and both new Batman movies, rarified air to say the least.  Though I wouldn’t complain there are a ton of films that fall in the same plateau as Thor, the X-Men movies, Superman Returns and the various indie movies from the Crow to Kick Ass.  Each one was fun to watch, but never really took the next step to make it a truly great film. In this case, it could be the subject matter that was its downfall.  In the scheme of things, Thor isn’t really a fan favorite nor really … [Read more...]

Activision at Comic-Con

spider-man_shattered_dimensions_cover

By Eddy With such a large event at Comic Con , one would think that it would be easy to write about.  The problem is with so many different things going on all the time it is difficult to focus on just one thing.  Even veteran Comic Con visitors can sometime get swept away in the mayhem.  Luckily for me, one thing was able to grab my attention immediately and hold it for more than 2 minutes (no it wasn't the hundreds of girls dressed in skimpy outfits) it was Spiderman.  Yes I am a dork, but don't feel bad for D, I am slowly bringing her over to the Geek-side.  I am pretty sure the high school version of D would have made fun of her mercilessly by now. Anyways, Activision is coming out with a new Spiderman game: Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions .  The thing that makes this unique, other than being the first Spiderman on the new generation of game consoles, is that you get to play as four different Spiderman.  Each one at one point or another was a comic book series.   … [Read more...]

Iron Man 2 Movie Review

iron-man-2-movie

By Eddy There is a particularly nasty disease which afflicts most sports teams after a successful championship season. This malady is well known and discussed frequently by sports personalities such as Pat Riley and Bill Simmons. The name of this disease is called "the Disease of More", the most known symptoms is players WANTING MORE minutes playing, more money, more fame, more everything and the disease spreads quickly through the organization.  Yet sports teams are not the only ones who can be infected.  Successful movie franchises are just as susceptible, especially those based on comics.  The list is long but distinguished-Spiderman, Indiana Jones, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, Die Hard, Terminator, Predator, Aliens, The Godfather, etc.  Once you have seen this small sampling, you might be saying wait those movies (series) are great, some of them historically great how could they have suffered from "the disease of more"? Well let's take the … [Read more...]

Blog: Shonen Jump/Viz Media Panel at Comic Con

ultimo

By Eddy Through Shakefire.com I was able to sit in on the Shonen Jump panel hosted by Viz Media. Headlining the event was the news of the serialization of Stan Lee's new manga called Mechanical Boy: Ultimo in the pages of Shonen Jump magazine. Mechanical Boy:Ultimo represents a cross over from traditional comics that I and many Americans grew up with along with the Japanese manga style that has become very popular in the U.S.  Stan Lee in collaboration with reknowned manga creator Hiroyuki Takei were scheduled to talk to the filled to capacity room.  I was able to talk my way into front row seats with the rest of the press. The panel started with discussion regarding the upcoming issues for Shonen Jump with extra attention paid to new upcoming issues and special releases. We were then introduced to Hiroyuki Takei creator of Shaman King.   He spoke in-depth about his influences in creating Mechanical Boy:Ultimo and his relationship with Stan Lee.  Takei appeared … [Read more...]

Drag Me to Hell Movie Review

10028

The Return of Sam Raimi from Spiderman Purgatory By Jeff It's been damn near a full decade since the talented, frenetic Sam Raimi directed a movie that wasn't about a humanoid man-spider slinging around the Big Apple, forcing me to believe that the studio in charge made him to sign a deal ensuring he would direct the Spiderman trilogy back-to-back-to-back, with no passion projects in between to allow for some fresh, creative sensibilities to fruit (this explains why Spiderman 3 was such a dud). Well now, he's back, with an Evil Dead /Tales from the Crypt inspired return to his mangled, old rotting roots. The film's been garnering rave reviews and is already being referred to as ‘the word-of-mouth sleeper hit of summer' (it's not) and ‘the best horror movie in years' (yea, sorry, that honor belongs to the vampiric melodrama Let the Right One In , followed closely by runner-up The Orphanage ). Drag Me to Hell centers on Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), a quiet, humble … [Read more...]
