(video) Star Wars Kinect Review and Sweepstake

kinect-starwars-DH

Update: Congrats to the winners. To some older fans of Star Wars, this might be going against the grain a bit, but I really liked Star Wars Kinect.  Yes you can head on to the internet and check read how it doesn’t have this…or it doesn’t have that…but the main point that most of the reviewers are forgetting is that this game is for kids.  Not only was it accessible for Rock, who is almost 4, to play competently in the game, but I was able to have a great time submerging myself in the fun.  In my opinion there are more hits than misses in the game. Star Wars Kinect is a game divided into 4 smaller games.  I hesitate to call them mini games because they are much longer than what you would expect in a mini game compilation.  In addition, most of the games can be played by two people at the same time except for the pod racing game. The sections of the games are as follows: Jedi Destiny:  this is the mode everyone was waiting for.  Playing as a Padawan (Jedi … [Read more...]

The Complete Vader Book Review

The Complete Vader_cover

By Eddy Most adults now seem to take two paths when it comes to Star Wars.  The first enjoy it when they are younger but eventually lose interest and remain passive regarding the series, enjoying it for its nostalgia but not really going any deeper than the movies.  The other path goes way deeper than the movies and I will leave it at that.  The thing is there really aren’t products out there that seem to straddle in between the two paths. It become even more difficult for adults, it seems most Star Wars products are geared toward children and teens or for hardcore fans. The Complete Vader by Ryder Windham and Peter Vilhmur, appears to have successfully bridged many of those obstacles I just described. The coffee table size books, appeals to the hardcore Star Wars fan while providing enough interesting bits and pieces even to let a novice fan or even just some who enjoys pop culture follow along easily. The book mines the depth of the creation of Darth Vader both in Fiction … [Read more...]

NY Comic Con Thursday Rundown

NYCC 1

By Eddy Just got back from NY Comic Con (NYCC) and boy are my legs killing me.  It is not a fun walk from Grand Central to the Javitz Center, everything looks so close from google maps on my iphone.  Though I can’t help but feel worse for some of the other people walking with me still in total costume.  In New York City you see all types of crazy stuff, but for some reason it doesn’t prepare you for seeing grown men dressed as their favorite anime character (maybe my skin isn’t thick enough yet). Even on a “preview” day, the Jacob Javitz center was buzzing with activity. The day was supposedly open for press, exhibitors and VIP’s but I definitely saw 4 day ticket owners there as well. Though they added to the chaos, I was able to get a couple of glimpses of the costumes that make going to NYCC a fun event.  Yet, even as I write this I know that the crowds on Thursday will be nothing like that on Friday and Saturday, it doesn’t even compare.  A little tip … [Read more...]

Super 8 Movie Review

Super 8

By Eddy Leading up to the premier of Super 8, nobody really knew what the movie was about.  There was so much secrecy; it was if it was the next Star Wars movie or something.  It got to be ridiculous, and a bit self important. I was pretty sure that this movie wasn’t going to save the world or anything and I fairly certain Steven Spielberg wasn’t going to donate his share of the profits to hungry orphans so why the big hush, hush, why make it such a secret.  To this day I couldn’t tell you why.   Yeah it was a cute movie and all, but I don’t think knowing anything about the plot or creature made this movie any worse or any better.  It was Cloverfield all over again, just a little less disappointing. Before I went into the theater, I kept on hearing from those who had watched the film that it was a lot like Goonies in the sense that a group of kids go on a fantastic adventure.  For the most part it is true, there is a group of kids and there is adventure, just none … [Read more...]

Star War-Fate of the Jedi: Outcast Book Review

star-wars-fate-of-the-jedi-outcast-947103

By Eddy I never got into Star Wars books.  From my perspective they were basically fan fiction.  Just some writers fancy of what the rest of the story would be after the movies, but low in behold, I find that there is an entire universe of books, comics and other lore making up an entire universe.  Of course, everything is tightly monitored and organized by George Lucas (or at least his company to ensure that continuity is kept throughout each story and character).  Unfortunately, with this revelation regarding size and depth of the Star Wars world, it make it a significant barrier for a newbie like me to just jump in and start reading.  There has to be over 50 books, and series each with hundreds of characters and back stories, and with character appearing and reappearing in different series and different points in time. There is material ranging from before A New Hope (the first movie) started to up to forty year later. Needless to say, I was a bit apprehensive when I … [Read more...]

Dolby’s 40 Years of Excellence New York City Event

img_6134

By Divina A couple of weeks ago, while Eddy was on a business trip, I got a chance to celebrate Dolby's big 4-0 in their New York City Laboratories. Here is Buzz, Woody and I hanging out before the festivities started. Dolby Laboratories is one of the most influential sound companies in the history of film.  They have led the way in terms of the way we hear movies with such hits like Star Wars , and Batman Returns. Founded in 1965 they are global leaders in high-quality audio, surround sound and technology. In 2010, Dolby has teamed up with Disney and Pixar for Toy Story 3 to launch their newest innovation: Dolby Surround 7.1. I am not a techie, but I know how important music and sound make for any movie experience. When you pay your $10 plus per ticket you want to be transported into the world that the director, writers, actors and other movie magic people have created for you. … [Read more...]

ThinkGeek Toyfair Reviews

By Eddy Not to get too mushy so early in the post, but Divina likes to say that we are soul mates.  Of course, I agree with her (in no small part due to self preservation), but there was an instant during our visit to the Toy Fair that made me hesitant momentarily, it was at the moment that I walked into the ThinkGeek both and display.  Not to freak those guys out too much (I don't need another restraining order) but I ThinkGeek and I were made for each other or at least it was made for people like me. … [Read more...]

Comic Con 2009

comic_con_logo_052708

My Thoughts On Comic Con by Eddy As a Newbie to Comic Con I was really excited to experience The Con first hand.  Now that I am back to my Fortress of Solitude it dawned on me that I am just glad I survived it (To think that it wasn't even the busiest day...that would be Saturday).  So here are a couple of my thoughts on The Con. *No Children allowed- not to say that children can't go to Comic Con, I am just saying that it extremely difficult.  There are so many people, and it goes without saying that many of these people are fanatical.  Luckily Divina is an expert baby wrangler because it could have been much worse.  Right before opening, there was a huge pushing crowded chomping at the bit to get at the exhibits (and the free stuff) and it wasn't like it was pizza faced teens dressed up as the Green Lantern or their World of Warcraft characters.  It was the grandma aged women who represented the greatest danger. They were pushing, pulling and yelling at security … [Read more...]

Star Trek Movie Review

star_trek_movie_image_-_new_logo

By Eddy Taking place before the whole original cast and crew got together.  We are treated to yet another Hollywood Origin story, following in no particular order:  Batman Begins , Wolverine Origins , Hannibal Rising soon to be followed by an X-men origins film call X-Men: The First Class . Fortunately for all of us, J.J. Abrams (who came as a non Star Trek Fan), provides us an entertaining and ultimately well crafted movie.  The movie even had me, more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek , thinking about watching some of the older movies so I could get more history on the characters (A true feat considering the movies were horrible even back when they first came out). Star Trek introduces us to an infant James T. Kirk when he is saved by his father from destruction at the last minute by sacrificing himself, a moment that brought a momentary mist to my eye when thinking about my own boy. Fast forward years later, Kirk is now a young "Rebel Without a Cause" and … [Read more...]
